The story truly touched our lives, my biggest desire is for them to continue to reach the students at the schools for instance Rocky Mountain Middle School in Ammon Idaho because my son was a victim there. Two students assulted him in his classroom while the teacher stood outside the door. The students were charged and sentenced. My precious son was left temporarily paralyzed and emotionally tramatized. I pray that the children of today become compassionate somehow, someway, unfortunately it will be through the tradgedy of others, like precious Rachel.
The shooting at Columbine was terrible, just as any killing is. As a parent raising two children it always seems as a battle to keep their minds on the right track. The problem with Columbine, Virgina Tech or any other killing spree that takes place is the media.
I can understand the coverage of the media, informing people of the situation, keeping people abreast of what is going on in the world. However, Hollywood likes to capitalize on these occurrences, which tends to send the wrong information to our kids. The violence in movies and TV shows compounds the problems. Our society is so over run by violence around us, that it becomes a full time job as a parent to filter this information from our children so they understand what is right and wrong.
If it's okay to make movies and shows that include violence and sex, than in the eyes of our children it's okay to do these things. You can't always control what our kids hear or see or talk about at school.
I agree with many of the comments your readers have sent in, I guess as a parent I'll continue to do the best I can to keep my children on the right path. Was its Klebold and Harris's parents that couldn't keep their kids on the right path or their environment or society that failed?
don't give a @!$%# about that, sorry. Violence is not the answer for anything but actually is the problem maker itself. Peace brothers and sister. Flower Power forever and ever.
Somehow "Eric" became "Erica" Harris in the incident recap.

Where is Bobby when we really need him. I had just listened to him speak a few days before in Fargo, ND and shook his hand. Several of us planned to work on his campaign. I was sitting in the college commons when my roommate told me the news. We were distressed, only over losing the next president, but of the tragedy of another Kennedy brother gone. He is one of the few that would have made this country a better place for all to live.
I was shocked as most of the country was. I kept saying not again, it's not fair. America stood still when President Jack Kennedy was killed. America's heart was shattered when Bobby was killed. Bobby was my senator from New York. I was in my 20's and I felt he was going to end the war and unite America again. I remember standing in line 2-3 hours to show my respect and love for him at his wake in NYC. Forty years later we have Senator Obama running for President. What a fitting tribute!! Bobby's ideas and wisdom live on.
Well done Matthew!
Best of luck tomorrow.
Anne
Every American generation has had an (single) event that has change not only the political landscape, but it's a personal moment frozen in time! December 7th for some and everyone (of that generation) remembers where they were when President Kennedy was killed in 1963 and the same is true with 9/11. Not only do I remember getting up on the 6th of June only to find out that Senator Kennedy was killed in LA, I was a graduating senior in High School. But that event, I am convinced, help usher changes to the entire political system in the US. How? Kennedy would have beaten Nixon in '68; therefore Kennedy would have been the 37th President of The United States from 1969 to 1977. As a side note, I voted for Nixon for the first time in '72 and served in the Navy until 1973. Think what the US would look like with democrats in all three branches of government! Would President Regan have been elected in 1976? If so, then the 38th President of The United States would be in office from 1977 to 1985. No Carter, Ford or Nixon. Just think all the major decision and appointments to the courts the three former Presidents have made, all the changes to the American system including financial. Would the Dow be at 12, 500 today? How about the Middle East, would they have been at war?
Election do make a difference and the person who holds the Office of the President means a great deal for many year to follow.
